Every chassis ever designed has strengths and weaknesses. The LX architecture is quite capable as it is derived from a proven Mercedes Benz architecture. We have found that bump-steer and excessive bush compliance lead to rapid front tire tire wear on the LX series of vehicles.

There are significant bumpsteer changes in just a 40mm (1 1/2 inch) range up and down from at rest ride height. These changes occur hundreds and thousands

of time as you drive in every day conditions. It is the normal motion of the suspension that creates these large changes. In OE configuration bumpsteer is measured to total 15mm. In this YouTube video you can see the wheels Toe-In and Toe-Out was the suspension moves through the bound (loading) and Rebound (unloading) over even the smallest bumps.

Large Toe-In and Toe-Out motion requires more steering wheel correction as you drive. Bumpsteer motion creates tire scrub. You can feel this in a demonstration. Standing with your feet parallel would be neutral toe. Pointing your toes toward each other is Toe-In. Pointing your toes away from each other is Toe-Out. Standing on concrete or asphalt, without lifting your heels or toes move your feet to Toe-In and Toe-Out several times. That grinding you feel through the soles of your shoes is Tire Scrub. Your LX is actually grinding away your tires as you drive. Installation of Pedders EP2113 Bumpsteer Correction Kit reduces Toe-In and Toe-Out from 15mm OE to 3mm Pedderised. As you drive there will be less steering correction required because the the toe no longer swings over a 15mm range. Your tires will last longer. The chart below shows the amount of height change in 10mm increments across and the bumpsteer vertically.

Each change in toe represents on the chart indicates the amount of bumpsteer / tire scrub occurring in 10mm increments. Reducing this range from 15mm to 3 mm adds thousands of miles to your front tire life while improving your driving experience. Installation of the EP2113 Bumpsteer Correction bushes requires an alignment as it will change the Toe setting. Pedders recommends a four wheel alignment whenever suspension repair or upgrades are made. The LX use a Double-Pivot front suspension in the lower front control arms with a wishbone style upper front control arm. The sophisticated geometry is designed to maintain dynamic alignment geometry. The lower double pivot or Virtual Pivot design is similar to BMW’s larger models (5,6 and 7 Series as well as the X3 and X5 Sports Activity Vehicles) and is new to the 3 Series. The system provides improved steering feel and control under most road conditions. The two arms don’t actually intersect; if you visually extend their axes to a point where they do intersect, you find a "virtual pivot point" that is ideal under a wide range of operating parameters.
